Lighting should make your home feel great and work properly. Whether you’re upgrading old halogens to LED, adding feature lighting, or sorting out flickering lights, DB Electrical can help you achieve a clean, modern result with safe, compliant installation.
Lighting services we handle
We work on lighting for homes, units, townhouses and small commercial spaces, including:
· LED downlight upgrades, including halogen-to-LED replacements
· New downlights and new lighting points for renovations, extensions and new rooms
· Pendant light installation for kitchens, dining areas and stairwells
· Bathroom lighting, using suitable IP-rated fittings where required
· LED-compatible dimmers
· Feature lighting such as LED strip lighting, cabinet and shelf lighting, and toe-kick lighting
· Fault finding for flickering lights, buzzing, lights cutting out, and frequent globe failures
LED Downlights
LED downlights are one of the best-value updates you can make. They’re energy efficient, low heat, long lasting, and give you far better control over light colour and brightness.
When we upgrade downlights, we don’t just “swap the globe”. We check:
· the existing fitting type and condition
· driver, transformer and dimmer compatibility
· placement and spacing to reduce shadows and dark corners
· safety and compliance for the ceiling space
Warm white vs cool white
Choosing the right colour temperature makes a bigger difference than people expect.
· Warm white gives a cosy, softer feel and suits bedrooms and living areas
· Cool white looks brighter and crisper and suits kitchens, laundries and task areas
If you’re unsure, we can recommend a mix that keeps the home feeling consistent from room to room.
Dimmers and smart control
Dimmers are great when they’re matched correctly. With LED lighting, the wrong dimmer can cause flickering, buzzing, or shorten the life of the fitting.
We install LED-compatible dimmers and can also advise on:
· smart lighting controls
· sensors and timers for convenience and efficiency
· practical switching layouts, especially in open-plan homes
Feature lighting that looks clean
Feature lighting works best when it’s subtle and purposeful. We install and plan lighting for:
· kitchen cabinetry and splashbacks
· vanities and mirrors
· shelving and display areas
· entertainment units and feature walls
We’ll help with placement so the finished look is clean, balanced, and low-glare.
Flickering lights, buzzing, or globes that keep blowing
If your lights flicker, buzz, or fail repeatedly, it’s usually a sign of an underlying issue such as:
· failing LED drivers or transformers
· incompatible dimmers
· loose connections
· heat build-up or poor-quality fittings
· voltage issues or a fault in the fitting
We can test and diagnose the cause and fix it properly, so it stops repeating.
What to expect when you book DB Electrical
· Practical advice on placement and fitting selection
· Weather-suitable installation and compliant workmanship
· Neat cabling routes and a tidy finish
· Options for sensors, timers and smart control

Q. Can you upgrade my old lights to LED?
A. Yes. We can upgrade older fittings (including halogen downlights) to modern LED options for better light output, lower heat, and improved energy efficiency. We’ll also check compatibility of drivers/transformers and any existing dimmers so everything performs properly.
Q. Why do my lights flicker or buzz?
A. Flickering is often caused by loose connections, failing LED drivers/transformers, incompatible dimmers, or ageing fittings. Buzzing can also point to a fitting, driver, or connection issue. Because these faults can worsen over time, it’s worth having them checked rather than ignoring them.
Q. Can you install dimmers?
A. Yes — where suitable. We’ll match the dimmer to the type of lights you have (especially LEDs) so you get smooth dimming without flicker, buzzing, or shortened globe life.
Q. What’s the best light colour: warm white or cool white?
A. Warm white suits living areas and bedrooms for a softer, more relaxed feel. Cool white is often better for kitchens, laundries and work areas where brighter task lighting helps. If you’re unsure, we can recommend a consistent mix so the whole home looks balanced.
Q. Can you add more lights to a room that feels too dark?
A. Definitely. We can add extra lighting points, improve placement, or switch to fittings that spread light more evenly. The goal is to reduce shadows and make the room more practical without making it harsh.
Q. Can you install feature lighting (LED strip lighting, shelf lighting)?
A. Yes. Feature lighting works well for kitchens, cabinetry, entertainment areas and display shelving. We’ll help plan placement and choose the right type of lighting so it looks clean, is easy to use, and suits the space.
Q. Why do my globes keep blowing?
A. Frequent globe failures can be caused by poor-quality globes, excessive heat, voltage fluctuations, incompatible dimmers, or a fault in the fitting itself. We can diagnose the root cause and fix it so you’re not constantly replacing globes.
Q. Is it safe to replace light fittings myself?
A. No — light fitting replacement should be done by a licensed electrician. That ensures the wiring is safe, earthing is correct, and the installation meets current requirements.
